postheadericon Sandforce SF-1200 In Action

One of the newest SSD controllers to be supercharging our new SSDs is the Sandforce SF-1200. These controllers are leaving some Indilix-based disks in the dust according to the latest benchmarks. Mushkin, OCZ, A-Data, and Corsair are among those using the Sandforce controllers and it is paying off big time. Among the Sandforce based SSDs, Corsair seems to have a few tricks up their sleeves to push past the other disks in the IOPS test. Read More>>

postheadericon Team Xtreem

Looks like Sandforce is upping the bar in the SSD realm. Currently Sandforce is the quickest processor on the market for SSDs. OCZ is implementing it into their new Vertex 2 Pro. Team Xtreem is also getting in on the action with their Team Xtreem-S1 SSD. It blazes the trail at 270 MB/s Read and 260 MB/s Write speeds. It also supports the TRIM command which will keep your SSD moving at full strength throughout the life of the drive. More Here>>>

postheadericon New OCZ Apex in the Wild

For those of you wondering what kind of performance the new Apex SSDs from OCZ might have, I have your fix. PCPerspective puts together a great roundup matching the new Apex against Intel's X-25M, Raptor X, Velociraptors, and Velociraptors in Raid 0. How does the Apex fare? Apex comes in a solid 2nd place to Intel's X-25M. While the Apex is able to compete with the Intel in most benchmarks, the Intel is able pull away with its victories in random reads. OCZ definately has a winner on their hand here with Apex. They were able to create an internal raid with 2 JMicron controllers and eliminate the bugs that go along with them meanwhile increasing performance at a fair price. The Apex is about half the cost of Intel's X-25M. Read More>>>

postheadericon OCZ Vertex

The numbers are out on Vertex and they are looking very good. Some of the users over at OCZtechnologyforums.com have their hands on the 120GB Solid State Disk and they are getting ridiculous speeds. The 120GB drive is pushing 250MB/s Read and 240MB/s Write! Way faster than any hard drive. What this could very well mean is the Vertex SSD has reached the limit on the SATA II bus. SSD's seems to max out SATA I at 125MB/s and SATA II which is doubly fast looks like it could be hitting the wall at 250MB/s. Could Solid State Disks be hitting a ceiling before the new SATA interface is finalized. It's possible SSD makers will just bypass the SATA interface altogether and go straight through the PCI-E bus but that remains to be seen. Read More >>>

postheadericon OCZ Apex and Vertex Release Dates

OCZ's new SSDs are popping up everywhere. They are set to release the Vertex and Apex before the end of January, with the Apex most likely coming first. Apex will feature an internal JMicron Raid and it will sport 230MB/s Read, 160MB/s Write speeds. This will be very similar to G.Skills new Titan Drive. The Vertex has an ETA of 1/31/2009. Vertex will have an all new controller and include 32/64MB of cache. The SSD will be spec'd a little slower (200MBs Read/160MB Write)than the Apex but the cache and the new controller give the Vertex great benefits. The cache will help with repeated calls to the same data, but the new controller will do something much more beneficial. The curse of the JMicron controller is SSD stuttering. Many of these issues are documented on OCZ's forum but they are a pain to fix and not a cure all. Hopefully the new SSD delivers stutter free operation and speeds that rival current MLC and SLC products from Intel.
