The numbers are out on Vertex and they are looking very good.  Some of the users over at OCZtechnologyforums.com have their hands on the 120GB Solid State Disk and they are getting ridiculous speeds.  The 120GB drive is pushing 250MB/s Read and 240MB/s Write!  Way faster than any hard drive.  What this could very well mean is the Vertex SSD has reached the limit on the SATA II bus.  SSD's seems to max out SATA I at 125MB/s and SATA II which is doubly fast looks like it could be hitting the wall at 250MB/s.  Could Solid State Disks be hitting a ceiling before the new SATA interface is finalized.  It's possible SSD makers will just bypass the SATA interface altogether and go straight through the PCI-E bus but that remains to be seen.  Read More >>>

For those of you wondering what kind of performance the new Apex SSDs from OCZ might have, I have your fix.  PCPerspective puts together a great roundup matching the new Apex against Intel's X-25M, Raptor X, Velociraptors, and Velociraptors in Raid 0.  How does the Apex fare?  Apex comes in a solid 2nd place to Intel's X-25M.  While the Apex is able to compete with the Intel in most benchmarks, the Intel is able pull away with its victories in random reads.  OCZ definately has a winner on their hand here with Apex.  They were able to create an internal raid with 2 JMicron controllers and eliminate the bugs that go along with them meanwhile increasing performance at a fair price.  The Apex is about half the cost of Intel's X-25M.  Read More>>>
